This committee, co-chaired by Mayor Tom Potter and Commissioner Erik Sten, will serve at a policy and resource level and act as the body to accept and approve action items for the duration of the initiative. The primary role of the committee will be to hear, to review and to act upon information and recommendations presented in a series of six meetings. Each meeting will address one or more aspects that maintain the gap. The content of each meeting will be developed by a content committee and will include presentations offered by content experts.

The first Steering Committee meeting was held October 12, 2006 and was an orientation to the issue as defined by local and national data and community testimony. Materials presented to the Steering Committee can be viewed on the Steering Committee Materials page
The second meeting of the Steering Committee was held on November 30, 2006. The focus of the meeting was how new and expanded Outreach and Marketing strategies can impact our goal for 14,000 new minority homeowners by 2015.
The third meeting was held on January 30, 2007 at the 1900 building. The focus of the meeting was on Education and Credit Counseling and the Steering Committee listened to recommendations from committee members and discussed the strategies identified in the report that were targeted to consumers and industry organizations.
The fourth meeting was held on April 26, 2007 at the Portland Building and the meeting focused on the Loan and Underwriting process and received a legislative update on HB 3551. Steering Committee members signed a letter of support for the passage of HB 3551.
The fifth meeting was held on October 11, 2007 at the Portland Development Commission. The Steering Committee reviewed and discussed a draft of the Emerging Priorities and Guiding Principles for Implementation. The Committee decided to form a sub –committee to develop recommendations (see committee list).
